Sports nutrition software: what a high-performance nutritionist needs

ISAK, somatochart, periodisation, and load monitoring in one clinical record

7 min NutriManager

The sports nutritionist works with a data density that generalised software handles poorly: serial ISAK assessments, macronutrient periodisation by mesocycle, body composition analysis, and coordination with strength and conditioning coaches and club physicians.

ISAK module: beyond weight and BMI

Weight and BMI are insufficient to monitor body composition in athletes. Sports nutrition software must include:

- 17 ISAK measurements (skinfolds, girths, breadths, heights)
- Automatic calculation of Heath-Carter somatochart, % body fat (Yuhasz, Faulkner), and muscle mass
- Longitudinal evolution with chart between assessments
- Exportable PDF report to share with the club or physician

Nutrition periodisation by mesocycle

High-performance sports nutrition is not a fixed plan: it changes every 4–6 weeks according to the training phase:

- General preparation: moderate caloric surplus, high protein, micronutrient focus
- Specific preparation: CHO adjusted to training load
- Competition: high carbohydrates, easy digestion, precise timing
- Recovery/transition: caloric reduction, natural anti-inflammatory focus

Integration with training load

Training load (volume × intensity) directly determines energy needs. The nutritionist needs to see, at minimum:

- Training sessions for the week (modality, duration, RPE)
- Accumulated load this week vs. prior week
- Rest days vs. high-intensity days

Multidisciplinary teamwork

In clubs and high-performance centres, the nutritionist shares information with:

- Club physician: blood tests, active injuries, medication
- Strength and conditioning coach: training load, RPE, muscle injuries
- Sport psychologist: eating behaviour issues in a sports context

The digital record must have role-based access.

Red flags: generalised vs. specialised software

Do not use generalised nutrition software if:
- It does not calculate the somatochart (forces you to use Excel separately)
- It has no ISAK history with date-to-date comparison
- It does not allow plan periodisation by mesocycle
- It does not export reports in a format the club physician can read

Signs the software is sport-oriented:
- Body fat formulas specific to athlete populations (Yuhasz, Faulkner)
- Ability to add training load or import wearable data
- Plan templates by periodisation phase
- Native somatochart graph

Frequently asked questions

Not technically, but strongly recommended. The software calculates correctly if the inputs are correct. ISAK certification ensures measurements are taken correctly, which determines the validity of the calculation.

Yes. The ISAK module and periodisation work equally for recreational and elite athletes. The difference lies in assessment frequency and required precision, not in the software.

From the athlete's record, generate the PDF assessment report and share by email or download it. From the evolution sheet, you can export the ISAK history to CSV for external analysis.
